In today’s online environment managing the web presence your medical practice has can set you apart. Any Google search in your category will bring up an ever-increasing number of review sites, citations and directories. These sites are often the first impression patients get of your practice. They also heavily influence Google’s search results. If you don’t fill out these directories yourself they will be populated by someone else often with poor or incomplete information.

What is a Citation Anyway?

A citation is an online listing of your medical practice that can include information like:

  • Practice name
  • Phone number
  • Physical Address
  • Website
  • Photos
  • Links to Social Media
  • List of Services
  • Profiles of Staff Member

Citations are believed to be important for ranking in Google's local search results. The more citations you have especially on high quality and heavily trafficked sites like Yelp or Healthgrades, the better your practice is likely to rank. That’s why it’s so important to submit your medical practices information to the top directories and citation sites.

A few tips on submitting your practice information include:

  • List the name address and phone number in the same format it appears on your website.
  • Use keywords in your listings for example; Fort Lauderdale Plastic Surgeon or Miami Dermatologist
  • Start with the most influential sites 1st
  • Post images but avoid using stock photography it could be seen as spam by search engines
  • Alert your staff regarding any citations like Google Places that send a post card to verify your address
  • Avoid using tracking phone numbers
